About Us
The Philosophy
WOAM is not a gym. It is not a program. It is a standard — set by a 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist who has spent more than four decades turning potential into performance, and dreams into gold medals.
Al Joyner has coached at the highest level in the world. But at the heart of everything he does is one belief: the same principles that made an Olympian great are the same principles that make a seven-year-old fall in love with what their body can do. Greatness is not reserved for the elite. It is earned — one rep, one drill, one day at a time — by anyone willing to do the work.
At WOAM, we train the whole athlete. The body, yes — but also the mindset, the discipline, the hunger. We meet you where you are. And we show you how far you can go.
Better than you were yesterday.
That's the only record that matters.— The WOAM Standard · ALJ84

The WOAM Method
Four Pillars
01
Olympic Foundation
Every drill, every session, every protocol at WOAM is rooted in the same methodology that took Al Joyner to the 1984 Olympic podium and produced Olympic champions across decades of coaching. This is not theory. This is proven.

02
Individual Attention
No two athletes move the same. Al Joyner coaches the person in front of him — not a generic program. Every athlete at WOAM gets coaching that sees them, understands them, and pushes them in the right direction.
03
Mindset First
Physical training is only half the work. WOAM develops the mental framework that allows athletes to compete under pressure, recover from setbacks, and show up every day ready to improve. Champions are built in the mind before they ever reach the track.
04
Progressive Mastery
We do not rush development. WOAM builds athletes in layers — mastering the fundamental before adding complexity, building confidence through competence, and ensuring every athlete owns each stage of their growth before moving to the next.

Grow Your Vision
Training Drills — A Glimpse
WOAM training covers the full spectrum of athletic development. Here is a window into what we build.
Speed & Acceleration
Drive Phase Mechanics
Explosive starts, forward lean, powerful arm drive — the fundamentals every fast athlete is built on.

Plyometrics
Bound Sequences
Triple jump-inspired bounding drills that build elastic strength, rhythm, and explosive lower-body power.
Agility & Coordination
Ladder & Cone Work
Foot speed, change of direction, and body control for athletes in any sport at any level.
Strength Foundation
Athletic Functional Lifting
Movements that translate directly to the track, field, and competition — not just the weight room.

Mental Conditioning
Pressure Simulations
Training scenarios designed to replicate competition stress — so when the moment comes, you've been there before.

Youth Development
Joy-Based Movement
Drills built to ignite love for sport in young athletes — where every rep feels like play and every session builds a foundation.

The Coaching Philosophy — In Al's Words
Al Joyner has always believed that the coach's first job is to see what the athlete cannot yet see in themselves. His role — whether with a five-year-old discovering they can run fast, or a seasoned competitor chasing a personal record — is the same: bring out what's already there.

He does not believe in building athletes from the outside in. He builds from the inside out — starting with belief, adding discipline, layering skill, and finishing with the kind of confidence that only comes from knowing you have truly done the work.
The word "Olympian" is not exclusive at WOAM. An Olympian is anyone who commits to being their best — who shows up when it's hard, who pushes past the voice that says enough, who refuses to let yesterday define the ceiling of tomorrow. That is the WOAM standard. That is what ALJ84 produces.

Footnote · The Origin of WOAM
The WOAM vision was first conceived circa 1980 by Al Joyner — then a young dreamer from East St. Louis, Illinois. It became reality on Father's Day at the 1984 US Olympic Trials at the LA Coliseum, where Al and his sister Jackie Joyner stepped onto the world's greatest athletic stage. What began as a personal dream became the defining ethos of a coaching legacy that spans four decades. WOAM — Where Olympians Are Made — by ALJ84.
